AMSOIL Synthetic Lubrication Frequently Asked Questions

I am new to the Harley motorcycle clan and many owners are sold on Amsoil motorcycle oils. I am not sure spending more for synthetics is worth the money. Can you give me some idea of why I should make the change to synthetic motorcycle oil?

I have a 1999 F-350 diesel and I am curious about using Synthetic motor oil in my truck. I have asked several people and no clear answer yet. Since each oil change requires 15 Qts. I would like to be sure of its acceptibility

I have been told that switching from conventional oil to synthetic can cause blown seals.  Is this true? Are there any other dangers associated with making the switch?

My diesel truck only cover 2600 KM a year.I have been using semi synthetic oil and oil change interval is 10,000 Km which is around three years. Is it too long? or should i switch to fully synthetic change every 3 years ? or just mineral base and change every 12 months which one is more economical and do less harm to the engine?

Thank you, Frankie from Sarawak

You speak of the need for a good high quality oil filter, but you don’t provide any specific guidance... and, in my experience, there’s a lot of variability in oil filters these days (much more variability than for oil, other than the new oils which are being labeled “extended service/miles”).

Is a “good quality” oil filter the pricey Mobil 1 and K&N Filters and their ilk? (The one’s with 99%+ multi-pass ratings/extended service ratings, and high prices to match??) Or the upgraded Fram’s of the world (Tough Guard/Extra Guard/Extended Guard)?, or Purolator Pure One, etc. (less expensive, but with excellent multi-pass ratings?) Or will any oil filter with a 96% first pass rating meet your criteria for “good quality”? (the base Frams, Purolators, etc.)

And which is the better rating to use if one adheres to your (still-squeamish?) advice for extended oil change intervals? First pass, or multi-pass efficiency ratings?? (I would think multi-pass is more important for extended oil change intervals than single pass, but not all filters provide multi-pass ratings!). And finally, what about “high mileage” oil filters? (Fram HM’s, etc., the ones with "stuff" in the middle of them?)

Thanks. Jim

My husband says he wants synthetic oil used...what are your feelings. Is it necessary except for his Diesel MB? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

I've had several suggestions on this matter that it is okay to go twice the mileage between oil changes on a diesel engine. I couldn't imagine going 10,000 miles in between an oil change, but also couldn't imagine going 6,000 miles as I was recommended. I've had the truck for 5 years and never a problem with the engine. What would be your recommended oil change (now; if they apply for diesel, or if us diesel owners are screwed on that as we are on fuel prices) on just a regular 7.3 Powerstroke diesel. The truck is also just two-wheel drive and does not go off the highway in any kind of extreme conditions. The location of the truck is North-Central Alabama and is the main area it stays in(if weather conditions apply).

Thanks. Chris Posey

I work on older model corvettes from the sixtys and seventys and have been told that the zinc additive in oil has been reduced, and in 2010 it will be eliminated. I am also told this is a concern with flat tappet motors as opposed to roller tappet motors. What should I consider when doing an oil change on one of these cars?
